RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

We ahve been looking for two years..at new and used. The real difference between prices is narrowing..and perhaps there are some out there that the banks own...you might check that angle also. So far the new 2009 and possibly (year old now, 2008/maybe 07 seems better buy then used..as warranty can be had for four years. We looked at one 2005 that seemed really great until diesel mech bud looked at it and found a bit of wear in the engine and such.. he found same on a gas model..and they are expensive to fix.. do not want to be on the road and face a big bill.. so newer is worth the price and they are dropping way fast..many used asking more then the new models or very close.

RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

I agree with what the users post.. a invaluable resource of REAL information.. We are still looking as prices falling big time. Might we ask. anyone have info on what TOLLS cost for RV's, are they considered trucks etc. Ask as we see more and more toll roads either in place or coming? Fuel prices bad enough,,now more tolls? And hope all keep posting their tips as first time buyers we need any info out there. Looked at one used unit and price 2006 was higher then new 2008 unit.. so now unless really good deal out there will look at new...as dealers stocks must be going way up along with costs. ARE THERE ANY listing out there of real lemon products or real outstanding (and reasonable) products.

RE: REAL WORLD RV gas/v/diesel MPG is ????

Saw on news where D fuel at $5 or more...and that gas may go to five plus this summer or higher. noted oil at 122/bar. today. So it is going to start to matter pretty soon.. right now use out F150 at min as Nissan's get a lot more MPG..Wake up call when rider mower cost nearly $8 to cut yard in fuel as use over 2 gals. So cannot really guess at what gas/D will end as. BUT noted that D NEW units are now cheaper then the used D's. or close. Want to get one with some warranted as a bit twitchy about such things. once had a boat that ate a small diesel 12 HP (sail boat) and even that was big dollars for the time. Now looking and watching as note that many used RV's are listed as more $s then the same new.. even down to the 2004-07 ranges.. Suspect some had big payments plans to trade in but now that world changed.. The savings in fuel will add up.. as it goes up.. then comes trade off for flat land vse hill land.. and the MPG. as it can add up real fast. Think I saw D are $5.29 or so. a bit of sticker shock. and noted "Trucker filling up cost him $1200.. so the RV with big tanks? Do RV get any discount when fueling up?

RE: REAL WORLD RV gas/v/diesel MPG is ????

SO far interesting data...and as one post mentioned D @ $5 or more per gal..and gas not exaclty free eiher..some say to $5/gal (what will D be if gas at $5?) So the delta between 2-5 MPG can start to add up real fast.. and speed verse MPG is a factor.. how much to pay for how fast to get somewhere? Lots of good data so far.. wonder when MFG's will be adding some aerodynamics to pull up miles or any out there now.. Suggest fuel costs will be an issue before long.. as it is going to add up as a major expense... Thanks for all so far.. very good stuff... and seems others like to enjoy records keeping. My Dad was in auto industry nearly from start. felt TWO items gave engine health. Oil condition and watching mileage... he religiously changed oil at 3k and always watch MPG.. seemed to work well as never remember a car that ran bad. and there were many/ Looking forward to more data and ideas, experience, etc.. do they put tire pres read outs on the RV's as they do on auto? TP is a big deal and would guess more so if on RV? Seems cruise is way to go for MPG! Again thanks as nothing like experience for help in making buying decisions!

REAL WORLD RV gas/v/diesel MPG is ????

Still looking at all out there. in 34-40 or so.. WONDERING about the MPG with gas verse diesel, what impacts by speed, and yes 70 would use more then 50.. and thought of RV with tow, at 70 terrifies me as at that speed one can only hope nothing serious happens on road or with RV as suspect "wiggle room" envelope gets rather small. But curious as to size, speed, tow, gas v diesels, etc.. what do the real folks driving real RV's on real roads, not only interstate etc.. get for MPG? Bud with 42 foot laughs and says.. "well on average I get about 30 MPG, the Primus I tow gets around 50 or so and sometimes RV gets 10..so 'average for my travels is 30 MPG". What is real world for most...? And doubt the generator's use much?

RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

Their civic is a very old model.. one of the square shaped ones..that they WILL NOT SELL.. maybe a 70's series.. has over 200K and at least one new engine... can it be model specific for miles? I asked them about it and am waiting for response..but something gave the miles to ins co. which raised the rates.. even if car towed..

RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

uwrote Your TV comment lends me to believe you are confused on the HD and Digital TV differances. First, TVs come in CRT (conventional Cathode Ray Tube), LCD, Plasma, and rear projection. All those could be Digital or analog, they all could be HD too. What one has to look for is the tuner, if it is analog tuning, that set will need a converter box to convert the new digital signal to a useable analog signal for the tuner to work. If it has a digital tuner it is capable of recieving the using the new digital signal as it arrives at the set. What I was saying is HD is digital and a TV that is listed as "LCD" liq crystal may NOT be an HD it maybe analog.. and a lot of them area..and as such are being dumped..HD to me refers to digital as analog will not process new HD signals.. starting in FEB 2009.. converter box is OK but another 100 bucks or so for BOTH TV's... front and rear.. for local stations as dish/cable are handling it for you, regardless of A or D set. BUT the dealers never mention which is on board..nor it seems like to ba asked. ANOTHER biggy with the group that loosely falls under LCD.plasma etc.. is the view angles also shift depending on type. and that we found real drive on one outside unit that pretty much demanded head on look only. later we found it was not digital and was one of many being dumped. NOTE Circuit City and others fined big time by FCC or such for selling Analogs and kind of forgetting to advise consumers of impact of 2009.. which by LAW they were required to do.. Getting so when looking at any unit.. I now approach it as a swindle waiting to happen....from experiences so far get a bit fed up with what we hear and see.. but then that is not limited to RV's.. seems the scam is often the selling points.I have heard but never confirmed that it is not illegal to turn back miles on RV as some say it is not covered by laws in some states..We are in no hurry to buy....so we look, take notes and seek advise... towing is one item we are concerned with.. as a side story our neighbors had a tow civic.. they had VERY low insurance rate for car as not used much. but ins looked at miles on it.. mostly all towed..and raised their rates.. even though tow car and RV carries ins for towed car. They were livid.. but tried it and now prefer a tow rig that has auto front wheels off ground... Kind of curious about various tow car hook ups..how they are installed on car side.. lights they use are ones that are not part of car.. and no brake on tow via RV.. Thought on tow.. good and bad...probably use small cross over or civic sized car..

RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

NOTE ON BUYING NEW 2008-09 etc... We are still looking at around 35-37 feet diesel and plan to tow. VERY little dealer info on what is required of towed car, how it is hooked up, front wheels of ground, etc.. or costs or what is best method hardware to use to tow BUT REAL RIP OFF we found was the TV sets. NEALY ALL say.. "LCD" etc..b BUT.. we found that nearly ALL were of the LCD BUT NOT HD.. which will be ONLY ones OK after digital kicks in. We asked dealers about that and got kind of dumb look of "Aw well....etc". One said NOT an issue as you will go Sat for receiving. so asked about what happens if we want local TV if parked somewhere as "local while on move" is question? We then find that a lot of "LCD" TV on sale, and more so installed in RV's is NOT HD.. and friend in TV business aaid, huge discounts being given at whole sale levels on the NOT HD but are LCD for use in any area, not just homes.. So WATCH what you get. the "Big LCD may not quite be what you thought it was.. and none could discuss if we wanted to play CD's, the old ones we have, as well as the new HD what happens then???? Seems that buying and knowing what you get is more difficult each day.. more so in RV land.

RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

Noted with the economy like it is...AND Diesel at $4.. it seems that used coach prices higher then new ones.. and dealers must be getting anxious to sell. We nearly bought a 40 ft. but at the end the dealer started adding up costs and what we thought wen with unit.. hoses, pwr cables. etc, hitch but adapter extra.. one tv not the two. and they were NOT HD.. a lot of stuff like that. so walked...Now going to wait a bit..but while used sounds good.. new is now cheaper as the prices drop..or so it seems so far. Comments and have learned to look REAL close as what comes with units..verse what it seems comes with unit..Amused at how some in sales do not seem to well informed at the tech side...like air brakes, engine brakes, etc. ANYONE have a choice of best..or why not to buy a brand?

RE: Forest River RV?????

We have a 2003 Georgetown MH and have been very happy with it.Like all units maintenance is necessary to ensure many years of problem free camping. We feel Georgetown gave us a lot of options standard even with the lower price. I think 3 years ago(last statistics I have seen) the Georgetown was the 7th best selling gas Motorhome in NA. Ahead of the Pace Arrow even. JM2CW Where is the listing of RV's and their sales rates...is there any reports on owner stats and such by brand... and how is the gas vse diesel issues.. and note many seem to go gas.. I was told that "Gas engines wear out quicker and bigger fire dangers.. but again first time buyer so trying to get all the data we can find. Same with the slides.. cannot find much that shows how the RV is like when slides in and going down the road..and what happens during short stops.. with slides in, are they in way or what..

RE: Forest River RV?????

have noted the Forest River RV seems a very low priced unit. is it stripped down or what. cannot seem to find much about them.. Anyone know much about them and what is a good reliable A diesel.. around 36-40 feet... that will last with light to mod use? Or is a used unit better idea? Seriously starting to look and make up lists.. so any input welcome. TO ALL So far a lot of great answers, often confusing when looking at ads and little real test data out there to assist...other then owners. Wish someone had a testing site or reliability or "this model-mfg" breaks down or is good or bad points. Right now wonder what prices will do with economy having a few big holes in it, have noted many used units out there with prices higher then new of same.. So keep data coming.. as kind of hard a week after buy to say "Well we do not like it..take it back.. BIG QUESTION WE NEED A SOLUTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND OUT WHAT UNIT IS LIKE TO MOVE ABOUT IN SIDE IF SLIDES IN.. WHAT IS BLOCKED ETC.. SEEMS NONE SHOW THAT. SO FAR JUST CUT AND PASTED OFF MFG DRAWING AND MOVED SLIDE BY PC.. BUT NO WAY TO TELL THE IMPACT OF SUCH. THOUGHTS THERE??? AS HERE THIS CAN BE AN ISSUE IF YOU JUST STOP FOR A A SHORT WHILE AND SOME STUFF IS BLOCKED?
